Let me share a bit about my journey. I retired years ago as a self-employed mechanical engineer. Initially, I excelled in my job and had a fantastic team of colleagues working with me. I trained them to work independently, and as one would leave to start his own business, I’d take on another. This cycle continued for years. During the summer months, when work was scarce, I bought old properties, and my team and I would convert and upgrade them to keep our wages coming in. It was brutal; I took on council house contracts each winter, managing 60 houses simultaneously. I worked such long hours that I hardly had time for my family.
Looking back, I regret being so money-motivated until I realised my grown-up daughter was leaving home to start her own life. Where did all that time go? I had spent 50 years living a second-hand life—living for others. Hearing Michael’s story made me realise I should have followed his path long ago. But it’s not too late! I’m determined to follow in Multi-Millionaire Michael Cheney’s footsteps and create a sustainable, residual income within the next eight months.
I’ve come to understand that I often make unnecessary sacrifices. Our happiness should come first; it’s our moral duty to ourselves! I feel so much happier now, creating my own life and catching up on lost years, rather than being tied down by projects that kept getting bigger and longer every time I bid for council contracts. My students and academic life always seemed to come first.

I truly enjoyed listening to Michael Cheney’s interview. It’s always enlightening to hear from those who have succeeded and absorb their insights. My biggest takeaway was his emphasis on focusing on something you are passionate about and finding people willing to invest in it. He also highlighted the value of having a traditional job to provide a reliable income while pursuing entrepreneurial goals.
As I reflect on the various ways to make money outside the 9-to-5, I realise the importance of having a source of income and experience to support my ambitions. Many ventures require an investment to be worthwhile, and Michael’s dedication to learning essential entrepreneurship lessons outside of his job is a testament to that. While I don’t view my job as a placeholder for my future business, I recognise the value of acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary for success.
